Harvesting in our "spare time"

Ian and Heather are the last of the Michiken crew in Meru, Kenya. They are both Graduate students in the School of Public Health at U of M. During their downtime between their Public Health Projects they help work at the Kithoka Amani Childrens Home and on the farm. Here's what a long morning in the hot sun picking vegetables looks like. Wednesday the 16th and Monday the 21st. Try carrying that back home slung over your shoulder in a broken sack....

Chronics Kru Student Ministry Visits

A lot of young people in Kenya are turning to Faith and Community work to elevate their country. The Chronics Kru Ministry came to visit for a weekend; brought with them gifts and love, and helped out around KACH! The children loved it!

Doctor Day

The University of Michigan Medical Students and a local Doctor spent the day giving all of the Kithoka Amani Children physicals. It was a great day for KACH. Height, weight, eyes, and much more were checked. The kids had a lot of fun too!

The Kids thought the eye exams were very silly!

Luckily the Medical Students and the Public Health Students worked together to direct the large crowd of over 20 kids through each station.

The babies were coming down with colds so they needed extra attention from the doctor.

They were both given a perfect bill of health otherwise :)

And the best part was that the Medical Students painted a Giraffe to measure the kids heights!!! The kids and staff absolutely adore it!!!

Rugby

Saturday Afternoon Study Break

After lunch the UofM crew went to watch Kenyans best rugby teams fight it out at Meru Sevens Rugby Tournament at Kinoru Stadium, Meru. It was like a late 4th of July for the MichiKen crew. We enjoyed some sun, bbq, good music and great sports.

Building a Kitchen!

The kitchen was made of four old posts and a tin roof. The fire was a pit between three large stones, the pots for cooking just rested atop the burnt stones. It's hard to cook three meals for over 50 people daily this way. The wood is expensive and fires like this waste too much. When it rains, its hard to do work out there. And the structure is on it's last leg, waiting for a good storm to come and knock it over.

So, we're changing that....

With a lot of help from the Amani Crew of builders and workers!

Shout out to Steve, we couldn't do it without you!!!

We'll post more when we finish!

It's getting close now....

Safari Weekend!

Ashnil Samburu Camp

The Camp sits in Buffalo Springs Game Reserve in Isiolo Kenya. (http://www.ashnilhotels.com/ashnil-samburu/)
The weekend was the most amazing adventure of our lives, we saw beautiful scenery, breathtaking wildlife and mother natures bounty in its most natural form.

June 18 and 19

Bees!!!! Today two beehives were placed at the Eco Lodge! It involved some tree climbing, rock climbing, melted wax burns and hard work. But by the next morning one of our hives had a huge swarm of bees!!!! There were different boxes used to insure a higher probability of success.

The Bee Boxes being transported.

Digging Holes. The MichiKen Amani crew also dug 3 ft deep, 4 ft wide holes to plant 50 banana trees! It was a day of very hard work and dirt and sweat.
